GRANITE Act Endorsement/Favorable Mention Tracker

Tracking all the organizations that have formally endorsed or expressed support for the federal GRANITE Act in this one handy page.

ITIF:

The GRANITE Act shows that the United States does not have to accept foreign censorship as a cost of doing business. Instead, policymakers can send a message that foreign laws targeting free speech on American platforms will face repercussions. When democratic governments impose content restrictions on American platforms, they legitimize China’s digital strategy, one built on controlled speech and one that systematically erodes the open Internet that gives the United States its strategic edge. In an era of technological competition with China, a free and open Internet is a necessity, and Congress should defend it.

NetChoice:

Congress should move quickly to pass the GRANITE Act and send a clear signal that Americans’ free expression rights are non-negotiable, and no foreign court’s judgment can change that.

FIRE:

Not an endorsement, but a favorable mention in an article out on the day of this post (Oct 26th):

For example, the Guaranteeing Rights Against Novel International Tyranny and Extortion (GRANITE) Act, introduced by Rep. Michael Rulli and Sen. Mike Lee, includes a section that would prevent U.S. courts from enforcing foreign judgments or orders that burden speech in ways that are inconsistent with the First Amendment. It would extend the SPEECH Act’s shield from libel claims to all foreign judgments that would burden constitutionally protected speech. So if a foreign government tried to weaponize U.S. courts to enforce any of the censorship described above, the court could reject it out of hand.

While it is not clear whether the GRANITE Act will ultimately become law, the principle behind it is a simple one. Whatever power a foreign government might have over speech within their own borders, they have no business censoring American speech. U.S. officials should prioritize these issues in our international diplomacy and work with foreign governments to establish norms and legal protections against cross-border speech policing across the globe, while ensuring we are doing the same within our borders.

R Street:

The GRANITE Act represents Congress doing what only Congress can do: erecting a uniform national shield against foreign attempts to censor American speech through American courts. Well-targeted and carefully drafted, the bill is built on a legislative model with a record of unanimous bipartisan support.

Advancing American Freedom:

The provisions of the GRANITE Act are necessary steps for protecting the First Amendment online. Congress should pass the Act among other legislation that serve to protect essential American rights.

…the [GRANITE] Act powerfully adjusts the balance of power between American companies and foreign regulators.

Restore the 1st:

GRANITE would, for the first time at the federal level, create a forum in which the targeted American can answer foreign pressure under American law. That is why the coalition added it to its supported bills on the day it was introduced, and why it sits at the top of this section.

More to come…?
